The community is invited to an information day and to provide feedback on the recently proposed street upgrades to Green Square.

The City of Sydney announced its plans to upgrade and raise the height of Joynton Avenue in Zetland by up to 1.7 metres to reduce the risk of dangerous flash flooding.

According to Lord Mayor Clover Moore, the Green Square town centre is situated on the Waterloo Swamp floodplain where heavy rain may result in major floods.

The Lord Mayor said the upgrade seeks to improve the safety and accessibility of Joynton Avenue for the growing number of residents, workers and visitors in Green Square.

“Joynton Avenue is an important thoroughfare at the heart of the Green Square town centre, and will soon be home to major new community facilities including a childcare centre, creative hub, aquatic and recreation centre and several parks,” the Lord Mayor said.

Further, the upgrade works would include preparation for the potential introduction of light rail and a refurbished heritage boundary wall on Joynton Avenue at the former South Sydney Hospital site.

Also, footpaths, lighting and bus stop facilities will be upgraded, with installation of the Epsom Road cycleway, as well as three new sets of traffic signals at Joynton Avenue’s intersections with Elizabeth Street, Zetland Avenue and the block between Zetland Avenue and Hansard Street.

The plans are on public exhibition until Monday 17 October at sydneyyoursay.com.au.

An information session will be held at Mary O’Brien Reserve, Joynton Avenue on Saturday 8 October from 10am to 1pm.
