New red-light speed cameras in Surry Hills are now turned on.

According to Transport NSW, two new red-light speed cameras are now located at the intersections of Crown Street and Albion Street and the intersection of Foveaux Street and Crown Street.

Executive Director of the NSW Centre for Road Safety Bernard Carlon said the new cameras will target red-light running and speeding at the intersections.

This is in response to the frequent crashes at the aforementioned intersections –17 people were injured after 16 crashes at the intersection of Crown Street and Albion Street, while 12 people were injured after 16 crashes at the intersection of Foveaux Street and Crown Street from 2011 to 2015.

“We know that running red lights can lead to serious T-bone crashes or vehicles crashing into pedestrians. Around 80 per cent of red light speed camera fines come from people running red lights so we know that we’re addressing this problem directly.,” Mr Carlon said.

“The new cameras will help to improve road safety in a busy part of Surry Hills. The shopping, eating, and local services attract a lot of people to this area which is also a key pedestrian thoroughfare for special events at Moore Park,” he said.

The new cameras will operate in warning mode from Tuesday 25 October for one month during which time drivers caught by the cameras will be sent a warning letter to encourage drivers to change their behaviour.
