NSW Health warns Sydneysiders to be alert as Christmas draws near.

According to the NSW Health Department, families break their regular routines in the holidays, leading to more unnecessarily hospital emergency ward visits.

Dr Kerry Chant, NSW Health’s Chief Health Officer, said that slipping from a ladder, falling of chairs, choking, intoxication, burns, poisoning and even heart attacks are reasons for many to end up in hospital.
“During the festive season, people do more than they normally would, consume more than they normally would, and take more risks than they normally would,” Dr Chant said.

“Definitely don’t do anything that requires your full attention while you are under the influence of alcohol,” she added.

Parents are advised to be on alert of their children for choking hazards from small toy parts, glow sticks, lights, batteries and be aware of poisoning and bites.

Elderly people are advised to make sure they have all sufficient prescription medication and be aware of their meals and the heat.

“It’s important to be mindful of yourself, your family and your loved ones as it is often that momentary distraction when people suffer a fall, a burn, or something worse,” Dr Chant said. “A trip to the hospital emergency ward is not how anyone should spend Christmas.”
