Cancer patients in Australia can be hopeful for a new cannabis medication to prevent chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting.

NSW will be world-first to trial medicinal cannabis to prevent chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. It will involve over 80 patients and expand to 250 patients, becoming the largest and the most definitive trial in the world.

Over one third of cancer patients suffer from nausea and vomiting even after prescribed anti-nausea medication.

The trial will observe whether cannabis medicines will alleviate chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and provide a definite answer.

“The trial will be using an oral plant-derived, pharmaceutical-grade capsule- the first of its kind in the world- containing equal amounts of Tetraphydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD),” Minister for Medical Research Pru Goward said.

Ms Goward added that the trial will provide better understanding of how cannabis medication will provide relief to cancer patients.

This is part of the NSW government’s $21 million initiative to support medicinal cannabis clinical trials and reforms.

It will be led by Associate Professor Peter Grimison from Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Camperdown in conjunction with the University of Sydney, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and NSW cancer centres.
