Drowning prevention information is urged to be included in the “Blue Book” issued to parents on the birth of their baby.

Recent cases of drowning death of children are alarming the Government to send proper information to the parents.

The 130-page Baby “Blue Book” contains information for parents on keeping their child safe. It is part of the Government’s initiative to provide the most direct information to the parents.

“Many parents rely on the Blue Book for lifesaving information about safety, including on how to prevent SIDS and the proper use of child seats, but there is a serious gap on water safety,” NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley said.

It also includes information on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and sleeping but nothing on reducing the risk of drowning and the relevant necessary actions.

“Informing parents about water safety is the best defense we have in reducing the number of infant drowning deaths,” Mr Foley said.

“Making parents aware of the dangers from day one will start a lifetime water safety practices, like teaching kids to swim,” he added.

The motion to include a page containing information on water safety was already passed in 2012 by the NSW Legislative Council but the Government has failed act.

Minister for Emergency Services has also failed to provide appropriate funding under the 2015-16 grants for water safety black spots and arrange a meeting with the Water Safety Advisory Council.
More actions need to be taken for the 100,000 babies born in NSW every year.
