Sydney’s most iconic landmarks will be lit up for this year’s Chinese New Year Festival.

From 27 -29 January, the City of Sydney and Westpac will illuminate buildings including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, and Sydney Town Hall in red to celebrate the Year of the Rooster.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the illuminations were the “perfect way” to launch one of world’s largest celebrations of the Lunar New Year.

“Sydney Chinese New Year is the largest and most exciting Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia and lighting our iconic buildings lucky red will provide the perfect backdrop,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Sydney will come alive from Friday 27 January, welcoming the Year of the Rooster with over 80 events including art, food, performance, workshops, dragon boat racing and much more.”

Also, Westpac will host a ‘Wall of Fortune’ at Circular Quay which displays up to six hundred Lunar New Year messages every minute on a large screen that is two metres tall and almost eight metres wide.
Sydneysiders are encouraged to share their Lunar New Year fortune by taking a photo of the screen and posting it on social media using #westpaclunar.

Moreover, the Westpac Lunar Lantern Hub at Martine Place will feature a 50-metre canopy of red lanterns, and visitors can learn to play one of the most popular Chinese games at The Star’s Mahjong Garden.

This year’s Chinese New Year Festival runs from 27 January to 12 February and will feature more than 80 events. For more information, visit www.sydneychinesenewyear.com
