Moon Jae-in criticised his biggest potential rival, Ban Ki-moon at his recent book publication event.
Moon stated that Ban Ki-moon’s victory of South Korea’s presidency will only extend the “old evils” of Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak governments.

“Ban’s win can be considered as an extension of the Park administration and the revival of Lee Myung-bak,” Moon said.

He described the Park and Lee governments as “evils of the old era and system”, dividing people into conservatives and liberals.

“Ban might have more experience and knowledge than me as he is older, but the important thing now is to change those in power,” he added.

Many of the officials who worked for the former Lee Myung-bak’s administration are joining Ban’s campaign. Moon’s comments reflect the current situation.

He stated that he can renovate the nation in compliance with the people’s wishes expressed in the recent candlelit rallies.

“The mission of a politician at this time is to completely clean up such old evils and renovate the nation. I am well prepared and qualified for that,” Moon said.

In contrast, Ban Ki-moon said that it felt like his “destiny” to run for president, as he was the only one qualified for the job.

Ban Ki-moon said he would decide which political party to align himself after the Lunar New Year holiday. He has been using his own finances into his upcoming presidential campaign.
