NSW residents will be ensured the best possible healthcare through a $107 million hospital internship program that prepares the health workforce of the future.

This internship program will be applicable to all domestic and some interstate medical graduates of NSW universities.
“Today’s new medical interns will be working enthusiastically and ensuring our community gets the health service it needs,” Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government has rebuilt NSW’s economy and we’re able to use that strong economic performance to support the world class health system that we have here in NSW,” he added.

992 medical graduates will be undertaking this internship program through NSW Health this year.

131 medical graduates will be placed in a rural setting in their first two years through the NSW Rural Preferential Recruitment pathway.

All interns will complete a compulsory term in the areas of medicine, surgery and emergency.

They will be placed through a network of metropolitan, regional or rural hospitals, as well as taking a position at GP practices.

In Sydney hospitals, Westmead has the highest number of interns followed by Royal North Shore, Nepean, Royal Prince Alfred and St George hospital.
