Two people from Bali returned to Sydney with measles. Both travellers were on Virgin Airline flights from Denpasar Bali to Sydney.

This is the second measles warning NSW health has issued this week. The total number of measles cases in NSW has reached eight for 2017. All of them have contracted the disease overseas.

“The risk of contracting measles is higher in certain overseas countries, and vaccination is your best protection against this disease, so it’s important to seek advice from your doctor on the appropriate vaccination to have ahead of overseas trips,” Director Communicable Diseases NSW Health, Dr Vicky Sheppeard said.

The Sydney resident spent time in locations such as Virgin Airlines VA70 that arrived 7:30am at Sydney on 1 March from Bali, pharmacy on Auburn Road, NAS Medical Centre and Auburn Hospital Emergency Department between 28 February and 6 March.

The Brisbane resident was infectious in transit in Sydney between 2- 3 March and spent time at Virgin Flight VA79 from Bali that arrived at 7:30pm Sydney on 3 March, Sydney International Airport, Terminal transfer bus to Domestic Terminal and the Virgin Flight VA932 to Brisbane.

Measles is a highly infectious disease and is spread through the air when the infected person coughs or sneezes. For those who have been in these areas between 28 February and 2 March should watch out for symptoms.

The symptoms include fever, sore eyes, coughing and rashes all over the body.
