The 2017 Metropolitan Water Plan will ensure there is enough affordable water for Sydney households and businesses.

Under the new plan, Sydney water customer will save around $100 a year on their water bill.

Moreover, an average of $20 million per year for the NSW Government will be saved as existing water supplies will be used, delaying major infrastructure such as new dams.

Minister for Energy and Utilities Don Harwin said the plan proves that existing supplies are enough to deliver clean drinking water for the next 10 or more years.

“Our water supply will remain affordable, safe and reliable,” Mr Harwin said.

“I am proud to say that under our government the people of Greater Sydney are experiencing the first ever water bill reduction,” he added.

The four main outcomes of the plan will ensure water supply is secure, affordable, resilient to stresses and shocks and are from dams that are healthy.

The plan introduces environmental flows for the Hawkesbury-Nepean River from Warragamba Dam. This improves the health of the river in Western Sydney for native species and Sydneysiders to enjoy water activities.
Further, the WaterSmart Cities program will be introduced to ensure the urban environment is managed to keep the community green and healthy.
