Intellectual Property (IP) Australia has released an IP Mediation Referral Service that can resolve IP related disputes.

This service will offer services to all-sized Australian businesses with less complex and lower cost methods to resolve disputes.

Mediation has received praise globally in resolving 70 per cent of IP disputes.
Included in the service, businesses will have non-judicial options to protect IP rights, have access to private sector mediators and increase the visibility of mediation services.

Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Craig Laundy, said that the IP Mediation Referral service is a cheaper alternative to court action, that is accessible to all Australian businesses.

“The whole point of this service is to increase the value of intellectual property by providing cost effective option to protect it,” Minister Laundy said.

“One criticism of IP is it’s too expensive to protect, however with the IP Mediation Referral Service we are providing potentially cheaper alternative to court action and making I easily accessible to Australian businesses,” he added.

The Director General of IP Australia, Patricia Kelly believes that this initiative will help increase IP confidence for Australian businesses.

“At IP Australia we have a strong emphasis on supporting startups, SMEs and entrepreneurs because they are large contributors to jobs, growth and innovation in Australia. Providing access to affordable enforcement to these entities is a priority,” Ms Kelly said.

This service is aimed for Australian IP applicants or owners with an IP related dispute. They will now have access to directly engage with a private sector mediator.
