Jobs advertised in Korean language media 2016-17

Four out of five businesses advertising jobs on Korean language websites in Australia are offering illegal pay rates, according to a new audit by the Unions NSW.

Korean website is among one of the top language websites that offer illegal pay rates as little as $4.20 per hour, and is joined by Chinese and Spanish language websites.

The 2016 audit showed 74 per cent of all jobs being advertising below legal rates, with this year’s audit showing an increased figure of 83 per cent.

The lowest rate included $4.20 per hour as a nanny, $9 for an office clerk, $10 for cleaning jobs and retail jobs of $12.90. The average underpayment was $7.36.

Across the two audits, 78 per cent of 200 job advertisements were offering below minimum award rates. This was a total annual underpayment of $1.62 million.

Also, the average hourly rates of advertised jobs in hospitality was $13.60, making it $5.79 below the average minimum award rates.

All of the Korean and Chinese job advertisements were jobs located in NSW, mostly in Sydney. The Unions NSW confirmed that most of the jobs with exploited workers were in the hospitality industry.

“It is now a systematic business model where people think they can pay what they see as community rates rather than the appropriate rate,” Unions NSW Secretary Mark Morey said.
“Our research finds that some employers believe they can offer a ‘Korean’ ‘Chinese’ or ‘Spanish’ rate of pay. Your pay rate is not determined by passport or ethnicity. We are all entitled to Australian standards,” he added.
