A new housing initiative will help young people at risk of becoming homeless with the affordable rental housing supply boosts.

Following the NSW Government’s announcement of the second stage of the Social and Affordable Housing Fund last week, the City of Sydney announced its $3 million contribution to the St George Community Housing.

Based on the internationally successful “youth foyer” housing model, the new housing initiative – Foyer51 – will offer 51 studio style apartments for young people for an 18-month period.

Residents will be provided “tailored” support services and live-in uniting staff will be available 24/7.

Also, additional 26 affordable housing units for low income workers may be provided subject to development approval.

“This is a fantastic initiative and an example of how not-for-profits and all levels of government can work together to prevent homelessness and build more affordable housing in the inner city,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“The youth foyer model gives young people the support they need to live independently, learn a trade or profession, gain employment and ultimately break the cycle of homelessness,” she added.

The Lord Mayor added that following successful operations in France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Melbourne, the Foyer51 project would “give young people the support they require to live independently, learn a trade or profession, gain employment and ultimately break the cycle of homelessness”.

The City of Sydney will continue its practical support for specialist homelessness services in the inner city, with funding to support people sleeping rough into safe accommodation.
