A new cycleway linking the city to the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be accessible for thousands of people wanting to ride across the harbour.

This is a new initiative to boost safety and access, around the Sydney CBD area.

“Two thousand trips by bike already take place across our iconic Harbour Bridge each day, freeing up space on public transport and on congested roads for those who need to drive,” the Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

The current southern end of the space is shared by people riding bikes and people walking. The project will give both commuters their own space, from Kent Street to the Harbour Bridge.

In addition, the steep ramp to the narrow bridge over the Cahill Expressway will be replaced with a wider bridge and spiral ramp to make the bridge more accessible.

“When the link is complete you will be able to ride from the north end of the bridge, through the city, all the way to Central Station and beyond on dedicated cycleways without traffic,” the Lord Mayor said.

The new link is expected to reduce congestion, promote safe bicycle journeys and show improvements in health.

The new cycleway will assist thousands of commuters, as the number of bike trips across the bridge more than doubled between 2008 and 2016, according to Roads and Maritime data.

The Roads and Maritime will invite the public for their say on the plans on the southern end of the bridge in late 2017. The options report will also be displayed in late 2017.
