The NorthConnex twin tunnels have reached the halfway point of construction this week.
The completed twin tunnels would allow Sydney motorists to skip 21 sets of lights on Pennant Hills Road, making their commute faster.

According to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, the NorthConnex will save up to 15 minutes of travel time compared to using Pennant Hills Road.

In addition, around 5000 trucks will be taken off Pennant Hills Road every day.

This is major milestone for the NorthConnex project, which will change transport in NorthWest Sydney.
“Once complete, motorists will be able to travel from Newcastle to Melbourne without stopping at a single set of lights,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher added that 20 roadheaders are working 24 hours a day to deliver this vital infrastructure to take part of the National Highway route.

“So far almost 11 out of 21 kilometres of future road has been excavated with the project on schedule to deliver congestion relief to the thousands of motorists currently stuck in traffic on Pennant Hills Road each day,” Mr Fletcher said.

Tunnelling has been processing at around 400 metres per week with about 500 Olympic sized swimming pools of spoils being excavated underneath from homes and businesses. This has accounted for more than 1.3 million cubic metres of spoil being removed from the project so far.

This is a $3 billion project, with the Australian and NSW government having committed $412.33 million each.
