Container refunds will be available via electronic funds transfer to Paypal from 1 December 2017.

As the Return and Earn container deposit scheme launches from December, people will be able to use the reverse vending machine to receive electronic refunds.

The new myTOMRA app for smartphones will allow the container refunds to be securely transferred and deposited to registered PayPal accounts.

To use the reverse vending machine and receive the refund, the person claiming it needs to scan a barcode from the app under the barcode reader before depositing the containers. The barcode reader will be on the front of the machines.

More than 160 million drink containers end up as litter in NSW, eventually costing more than $162 million to clean up.

This is one of the NSW Government’s initiatives to reduce litter in NSW, and restore the environment.

“You can do your bit for the environment by returning eligible containers for a 10 cent refund at hundreds of collection points and reverse vending machines across NSW,” the NSW Return and Earn Organisation said.

“You can also choose to donate your refund to charity,” they added.

The other initiatives include over-the-counter collection points and automated depots.
Other refund options include donating the refund to a charity group, or printing out the refund docket to exchange for cash or redeem in-store purchases at a local retail partner.
