Surry Hills will go through a major development as the planning proposal for the Surry hills Shopping Village has been approved by the Council.

As part of the redevelopment, Surry Hills will include new laneway towards the south, new open space in the south west, and footpath widening in Marriott Street.

Moreover, a new supermarket, more retail spaces, and up to 170 apartments will be made available for the public.

“Surry Hills is a hub of social and economic activity with a lively mix of restaurants, cafes, bars and businesses,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said. “But we need good planning to make sure the local economy continues to grow and thrive.”

“This proposed redevelopment will improve the design of the shopping village, and changes in building height will provide essential open space for the growing numbers of people living and working in the area,” she added.

For the duration of the construction phase, a community bus service will be provided in Surry Hills.
The approved plan has received positive feedback from the community already.

It has taken important details such as land use layout, street wall heights and setbacks, street activation, parking and vehicle access, flooding and storm water, noise, and public domain improvements into account.

In addition, it has addressed issues raised by the community such as traffic impacts and noise management.
