Newborns in NSW can now be registered through an online registration system from Births, Deaths and Marriages.

New parents must register their baby within 60 days of birth. However, birth certificates will remain to be provided in paper form.

The new system will reduce the time and effort, usually required by the new parents.

“The previous paper-based system used by the NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages relied on pen and ink, was subject to postal delays and extra time for back office data entry,” Attorney General Mark Speakman said.

“This new easy to use process can be completed in around 20 minutes and new parents will receive their baby’s birth certificates up to two weeks earlier than the old stork-mail system,” he added.

Hospitals will provide new parents with information on the process of the registration, before they can be discharged.

Before registering, parents must agree on the baby’s name, get identification documents ready in JPEG, PDF or TIFF file, and be ready to purchase a birth certificate.

For the identification, both parents must provide three types of ID. There are two options of the three types.

The first option includes one identification each from Category 1, 2 and 3. The second option includes two identification from Category 3 and one from any other.

Category 1 identification includes Australian Birth Certificate, Citizenship Certificate, New Zealand Birth Certificate, or a New Zealand Citizenship Certificate and passport.

Category 2 identification includes Australian Drivers License, Australian Passport, Firearms License, Foreign Passport, or Proof of Age Card.

Category 3 identification includes Medicare Card, Centrelink Card, Department of Veterans Affairs Card, Security/ Crowd Control License, or Tertiary Education Institution ID Card.

Category 4 identification is a recent utility account, with the current residential address.
