M4 and M5 motorways will now be connected through the new WestConnex link which was approved this week.

The M4 tunnel at Haberfield and the M5 at St Peters will allow motorists to travel underground the Sydney CBD, shortening their travel times.

Moreover, this initiative will deliver open spaces for local communities.

“The M4-M5 link is part of a comprehensive range or road and public transport projects that are all connected and will make Sydney a much better place to live,” Minister for Planning and Housing Anthony Roberts said.

He added that the new link will take thousands of trucks off Parramatta Road, making travel times more efficient.

The twin tunnels will be 7.5 kilometers long, and provide motorists with four lanes of traffic in each direction.

In addition, the project will include an Interchange at Rozelle for future connection to the Western Harbour Tunnel and BeachesLink. This interchange will mostly be underground.

Further, the project will transform the Rozelle Rail Yards into to a 10-hectare park with green space, footpaths and cycle ways for the public.
Also, an additional 2.5 hectares of green space will be created in St Peters.
The project is valued more than $7 billion, and is estimated to be opened to the public in 2023.
