The NSW Government has confirmed the state-wide rollout of Digital Driver Licence (DDL) legislation, which is soon to be introduced to the parliament in the next fortnight.

If the legislation passes, a driver could use the Service NSW app to use their digital licence as proof of identity and proof of age. Physical cards will not be an absolute necessity, and leading to fewer cards to carry.

Other benefits will include the convenience to update details and renew licences from mobile devices, and receive real time updates and information such as renewal reminder notifications.

Moreover, this initiative will provide extra protection against identity fraud.

Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello said the digital licence will be more user friendly and highly secure.

“Smartphones have become de facto wallets and we’re using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios,” Mr Dominello said.

The proposed legislation will amend the Road Transport Act 2013, the Photo Card Act 2005, the Gaming and Liquor Administration Act 2007, and the Liquor Act 2007.

The trial has already been proven successful in Dubbo with 1400 participants, and 83 per cent of customer satisfaction rating in 2017.

“The Dubbo trial was big success and drivers gave it the thumbs up. The legislation will enable expansion of the trial so that other NSW drivers can opt in to access a digital licence,” Mr Dominello said.

This initiative is planned to be fully released and be made available across NSW by 2019.
