Following the Racist Posters incident, City of Ryde mayor Jerome Laxale released a multi-lingual Mayoral Minute with the support of 12 City of Ryde Councillors.

The Mayoral Minute included the information about the incident on 13 May, and some recommendations. Each statement was followed with a translation in Chinese and Korean.

On 13 of May, racist posters were found in the Ryde area including Top Ryde shopping centre, outdoor advertisements, electoral signs, and bus stops. The posters started with the following statement: ‘No more Asians. It’s not the face of Australia… We speak English’.

The Mayoral Minute stated that “The Ryde community was shocked and appalled recently when it emerged that racist signs were found in public areas throughout the City of Ryde. The City of Ryde is one of the most diverse cities in Australia with most residents celebrating the area’s multiculturalism and taking pride in making the area an inclusive society for all member of the community”.

Also, four recommendations to promote social inclusion were outlined in the release.

The first stated that the City of Ryde will condemn those responsible for the distribution of racist material in the community.

In the second recommendation, the Council acknowledged that the City was made rich by the multi-cultural people who live, work, and learn in the community.

The third reaffirmed the City’s commitment to the “Racism! It stops with me” campaign, and its continuous promotion through wide communications and normal media channels.

Finally, the fourth stated that the General Manager would write to the Community Harmony Reference Group, Festivals and Events Advisory Committee, and the Ryde Youth Council on feedback on the ways City of Ryde could further promote multiculturalism and inclusiveness.
