Opal fares will be adjusted in line with inflation, the NSW Government announced.

According to Transport for NSW, opal fares will increase by 2.2 per cent from 2 July, following CPI’s recommended annual increase.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the inflated prices recommended by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) – annual increase of 4.2 per cent – will not be adopted.

“Since the introduction of OPAL in 2012, this Government has kept the fares low with a five year fare freeze and then induction of an adjustment to fares by CPI only last year, and again this coming financial year,” Mr Constance said.

“As a government, we don’t support IPART’s recommended average annual increase of 4.2 per cent as we believe it’s more important to put commuters first and these changes show that we are continuing to do so.”

According to the Government, adoption of CPI changes would result in roughly a 39-cents increase per week.

Moreover, for Adult Opal customers, the current Weekday and Saturday cap of $15.40 will increase to $15.80. Current Sunday cap of $2.60 will change to $2.70, and the weekly cap of $61.60 will change to $63.20.

For Child/Youth or Concession Card users, the $7.70 Weekday and Saturday cap will increase to $7.90, with the $30.80 weekly cap increasing to $31.60.

There will be no fare increase for Gold Opal users and fares will remain at $2.50 for all day travel any day of the week.

Moreover, the Transfer Discount will remain for both Adult and Concession Opal card customers.
