Australian Capital Territory and Victoria each experienced the highest population growth rate in 2017, according to the new figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). 

ACT’s population grew by 2.2 per cent since the previous year, with net overseas migration as the main contributor at 48 per cent. Natural increase followed with 44 per cent, and net interstate migration at 8 per cent. Net overseas migration and natural increase were recorded at the highest levels ever in ACT. 

Victoria was the leading state in Australia with the highest population growth levels. 

“Victoria continues to lead the nation in population growth with an annual increase of 2.3 per cent, followed by the Australian Capital Territory at 2.2 per cent and Queensland at 1.7 per cent. The Northern Territory recorded the lowest growth at 0.2 per cent,” ABS Demography Director Anthony Grubb said. 

Following Queensland, New South Wales recorded a population growth rate of 1.5 per cent, which accounted for 116,800 people. 

Tasmania also showed high levels with a 0.9 per cent growth, mainly due to overseas and interstate migration. This was almost triple Tasmania’s annual population growth over the past two years. 

Overall, Australia’s population growth rate in the 2017 calendar year was 1.6 per cent, with the increase of 388,000 people totalling 24.8 million
.  
Net overseas migration was the highest contributor at 62 per cent with 240,400 people. 

Natural increase followed with 38 per cent, which was made up of 308,500 births and 160,900 deaths. In total, they contributed 147,500 additional people into Australia’s population.
