There are now over one million jobs in Australia in the professional, scientific and technical services industry according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This was released in the first quarterly Australian Labour Account, which included all jobs across 19 industry divisions.

Australian Labour Account provides the total picture of the labour market and measures the total number of jobs worked. This is significant as it shows the total hours worked across multiple jobs, not only the main job.

According to ABS, the professional, scientific and technical services industry increased by over 13 per cent between the year to September 2017, becoming the fastest growing industry in Australia’s economy.

This industry includes over 1.1 million jobs such as architecture, engineering, computer systems design, law, and accountancy.

“The Australian Labour Market showed that over 70,000 of these jobs in the professional, scientific and technical services industry were secondary jobs, where the person had another main job,” the Chief Economist at the ABS, Bruce Hockman said.

The jobs in the professional, scientific and technical services represent 8.6 per cent of all filled jobs, and increased by 11.8 per cent to 1.1 million jobs, and 481.2 million working hours from the year to September 2017.
