Toyota was recorded as Australia’s most popular choice as their passenger vehicle, according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Motor Vehicle Census data. 

In 2018, Australia recorded over 2.9 million Toyota registrations out of 19.2 million total registrations in Australia. 

“Toyota had over one million more registered passenger vehicles in 2018 than its closest rival, Holden,” ABS Director of Transport and Tourism, Justin Lokhhorst said. 

“This is the 13th consecutive year that Toyota has topped the list of registered passenger vehicles,” he added. 

Holden followed Toyota with 1.8 million registrations, which was a decline of 3.9 per cent from 2017 to 2018. 

Ford followed with 1.2 million registered passenger vehicles, which was a decline of 5.4 per cent from 2017 to 2018. This was part of a continual decline since the turn of the century. 

Mazda came fourth, with 1.2 million registrations. Mazda has shown strong growth levels, with an increase of 38 per cent in the five years since 2013. 

Hyundai followed in fifth place with 1.1 million registrations, which reflected a continual growth of 34.5 per cent over the past five years. 

Also, the registrations of petrol fueled vehicles increased by 0.6 per cent, with 90,200 more vehicles from 2017 to 2018. 

Further, the registrations of diesel powered vehicles increased by 52.1 per cent with 1.5 million vehicles in the five years since 2013. 

Comparatively, the number of LPG/Dual fuel vehicle registrations decreased by 34.2 per cent since 2013. 
In total, motor vehicle registrations increased by 2.1 per cent from 2017 to 2018.
