The new $50 banknote will be in general circulation in Australia from 18 October 2018.

The improved banknote has been created with upgraded security features to tackle counterfeits, and four tactile dots for the blind and visually-impaired.

The anti-counterfeit technology embedded into the new banknote will include the top-to-bottom clear window, containing a reversing number and three images.

The number 50 in the clear panel will be reversed as people move the note side to side.

In addition, there will be two patches on either side of the note that will change colour as the note is tilted up and down.

The Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Lindsay Boulton said the new innovative $50 banknote features will make it “very difficult for counterfeiters”.

Moreover, the new note has been improved to help more than 300,000 blind and visually-impaired people in Australia.

“It’s probably the most significant feature we have on our banknotes,” Mr Lindsay said.

$50 is the most widely circulated banknote in Australia, primarily used in ATMs.

The new banknote is currently being shipped around the country, as the RBA has been working closely with businesses with cash-handling machines for its release next week.

However, the key aspects of the previous design such as the colour, size and the people portrayer will remain for the ease of recognition.

The new $20 banknote is expected to be released in 2019, and the new $100 note in 2020.
