The NSW Government will recruit more specialist teachers to boost the number of students studying maths in the final years of school.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the new mathematics strategy which was launched to prepare for the STEM jobs of the future.

“We have done well to encourage students to study maths, with about 82 per cent currently taking up maths-based subjects in their HSC,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“With today’s announcement, we hope to see this number get closer to 100 per cent,” she said.

The new strategy will enable students who have not typically chosen to study maths to take a new mathematics-based HSC course. Scheduled to be piloted from next year, this course will focus on numeracy and practical applications for everyday life.

Also, 100 new specialist maths teachers will be recruited for primary schools over the next five years.

Moreover, 320 scholarships valued at $50,000 each will be provided for STEM undergraduates and career changers starting a Master’s degree.

Students will also be given an opportunity to work with universities to take higher level HSC maths courses.

Further, the Government will introduce more Maths Ambassadors to encourage students to develop a “love for maths”.

Education Minister Rob Stokes emphasised the importance of students feeling confident with maths and numbers so they are prepared for success in whatever career they choose.
“Everyone can be good at maths with the right support, encouragement and hard work,” Mr Stokes said.
