The Justice of the Peace website will soon be upgraded for easier access of the details of the Justice of the Peace (JP) volunteer.

From early 2019, people in NSW will be able to search the availabilities of a local JP who speaks their language. This will assist the culturally and linguistically diverse communities across NSW.

On the current website, people can search on the public register for a JP through entering a postcode.

They can also search the public register by entering a JP’s name or registration number, to confirm their correct appointment.

JPs act as independent and objective witnesses to important documents such as affidavits and statutory declarations.

JPs are vital for people who need witnesses when buying a home, accessing superannuation, going to court, or undertaking commercial or business transactions.

There are over 95,000 JPs in NSW according to the Attorney General Mark Speakman.

“The revamped register will solve this problem by enabling JPs to include the dates and times they’re available, in addition to their contact details,” Mr Speakman said.

“For JPs, it will mean fewer unwanted disruptions, while people who need a document witnesses or certified quickly will no longer have to waste time calling JPs- only to discover they’re on holidays or busy,” he added.
