The top 100 baby names of NSW have been released by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Traditional and royal-inspired names have topped the list for 2018, with the top 10 list remaining relatively unchanged in the past decade.

In NSW, the top 10 baby names for boys have been ranked as follows: Noah, Oliver, William, Lucas, Jack, Ethan, Liam, Alexander, Thomas, and James.

Liam was a newcomer in 2018, nudging out Henry which dropped down to the 12th spot.

Comparatively, Oliver was the most popular name for boys in Victoria, followed by Jack, William, Noah, Thomas, Henry, Leo, Ethan, Liam, and Charlie. Liam and Charlie were tied in the same place.

The top 10 baby names for girls in NSW have been ranked as follows: Charlotte, Amelia, Olivia, Mia, Ava, Isla, Chloe, Grace, Harper, and Emily.

Harper joined the top 10 list in 2018, replacing Zoe which dropped down to 13th place.

Victoria also had a similar top 10 list, with Olivia as the most popular girl’s name, followed by Charlotte, Amelia, Mia, Ava, Isla, Zoe, Chloe, Grace, and Matilda.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said the top baby name list provides an insight to the different families and communities in NSW.

“While traditional names dominate the top 10, we have seen a significant increase in the popularity of Muhammad (63rd in 2017 to 24th in 2018) and Ali (64th in 217 to 41st in 2018) reflecting the diversity of our state,” Mr Speakman said.

“Regardless of name, every baby born in NSW in 2019 will receive a free Baby Bundle from the NSW Government containing a range of essential items valued at a total of $300, including a sleeping bag, play and change mats, thermometers, and a first aid kit,” he added.
