Australia’s international education sector has contributed $34 billion to the local economy in 2018, showing a significant increase of 15.3 per cent.

More than 690,000 international students in 2018 contributed to the economy through tuition fees and living costs.

“Australia has a vibrant and high-performing international education sector, so much so the British-based Centre for Global Higher Education predicts Australia will leapfrog the UK to become the world’s second most popular destination for international students this year,” Minister for Education Dan Tehan said.

“Over decades of investment, hard work and the commitment of world-class scholars, teachers and administrators, Australia has established a global reputation as a leader in higher education,” Mr Tehan added.

The Government will continue to attract international students, especially to rural and regional Australia.

“International education is worth more than $32 billion to our economy, so attracting more international students to our regional universities will create jobs and business opportunities, drive tourism numbers and promote cultural diversity,” Mr Tehan said.

Moreover, according to a report published by Austrade, Australia is predicted to reach 720,000 international enrollments by 2025.

“While Australian universities are very reliant on China, where the numbers of college-aged students are flattening, we do see a strong potential in recruiting students from other key sending countries which are showing a strong interest in Australia,” the report said.
