Migrants will now be eligible to apply for Australia’s permanent residency after new occupations were added to the Skilled Occupations list.

The latest update, which came into effect from 11 March, added 36 new occupations to the Medium and Long-Term Skill List (MLTSSL).

In addition, the new Regional Occupation List also contributed 18 new occupations to the Skilled Occupations List.

The new list now includes 212 skilled occupations eligible for Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) program and 427 occupations under Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190).

“The Government continues to focus the Migration Program on addressing skill gaps in the economy and these initiatives demonstrate that commitment,” Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, David Coleman said.

Some new occupations added to MLTSSL include choreographer, music director, footballer, musician, chemist, zoologist, multimedia specialist and software and application programmer.

Moreover, the 18 occupations added to the Regional Occupation List include cotton grower, fruit or nut grower, livestock, beef, dairy sheep, aquaculture and crop farmer, dentist and anaesthetist.

27 of the new occupations in the Skilled Occupations list have been moved from Short Term Skill Shortage List.

However, the statement from the Department of Home Affairs confirmed that if an individual already holds a skilled visa, they will not be impacted by the removed occupations unless there are changes in circumstances that require the lodgement of a new nomination application.

Possible circumstantial changes include change of occupation or employer.
