Australia’s richest and poorest postcodes were revealed in the latest ATO taxation statistics for 2016-17, where 13.9 million Australians reported their tax returns. 

According to the report, there was a difference of $209,741 in average income between the richest postcode 2108, and the poorest post code 2308, both in NSW. 

Postcode 2108 recorded Australia’s highest average taxable income of $230,330, including areas such as Coasters Retreat, Currawong Beach, Great mackerel Beach and Palm Beach. 

Postcode 3142 recorded the second highest average taxable income of $193,904, with areas such as Hawksburn and Toorak in Melbourne. 

Postcode 2027 with areas such as Darling Point, Edgecliff and Point Piper recorded the third highest average taxable income of $187,769. 

However, even though eight out of top 10 highest earning postcodes were in Sydney, NSW as a state was home to Australia’s lowest average income. 

Postcode 2308 recorded Australia’s lowest average taxable income of $20,589, with areas such as Newcastle University and Callaghan. 

Another NSW postcode 2052, covering areas such as the University of New South Wales was ranked as the fourth lowest earning postcode in Australia with a taxable income of $24,855. 

Five out of top 10 lowest earning postcodes were in Queensland.
