The City of Sydney is inviting photographers as young as three years old to snap and submit their perspective on living in Sydney.

Children aged 3 to 11 who participate in the Little Sydney Lives competition have an opportunity to win $500 in photography equipment and exhibit their work in Hyde Park.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the annual competition, which is part of the council’s Arts & About program for holding events and temporary art projects in unusual spaces around the city, has become increasingly popular with young Sydneysiders since its inception in 2011.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity to see the perspective of Sydney’s youngest residents, who showcase great enthusiasm and originality in their photographs. I encourage all young snappers to take part!” Ms Moore said.

Finalists and winners of the competition will be selected by Mags King, managing photographic editor for the Sydney Morning Herald; artist and First Nations Creative Producer at the Australian Design Centre, Dennis Golding; and artist and photography writer, Cherine Fahd.

All 20 finalists will have their photographs blown up into large-scale portraits and displayed in an exhibition curated by photographer Sandy Edwards in Sandringham Gardens, Hyde Park.

Winners will be chosen from two age categories: 3 to 7 years and 8 to 11 years.

Last year, 7-year-old Kobe Cleary, from Meadowbank, won first place in the 3-7 years age category for his LEGO image, ‘Where’s Wally?’

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Patrick McCarthy, from Normanhurst, received the top prize for the 8-11 years age category for his photograph, ‘The little things of pebbles in the sea’.

The competition is the junior version of the City of Sydney’s long-standing Australian Life photography competition, which amateur and professional photographers across the country can enter for a chance to win $10,000 and have their work exhibited.

Entries for both competitions close at midnight on Sunday 16 June.
