Approximately 15,000 jobs have been created in the past year in Regional NSW, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The number of jobs created in Regional NSW since 2015 now totals to an impressive figure of 95,000. This is well-above the four-year target of 30,000 new jobs.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet described Regional NSW and its people as the backbone of the state.

“The people and businesses in Regional NSW are a cornerstone of strength for the NSW economy,” Mr Perrottet said. “We’ve seen a lot of job growth happening over the past five years and this is testament to the hard-working men and women in our regional areas”.

The unemployment rate for Regional NSW has decreased by 0.5 per cent through the year, and currently sits at 5.2 per cent.

“Our record $89.7 billion infrastructure spend is fuelling record low unemployment and making a real difference in every corner of the state,” Mr Perrottet added.

Moreover, the participation rate for Regional NSW has increased by 0.3 per cent through the year to April 2019, and currently sits at 60.1 per cent.

“Our strong economic management is the foundation that gives regional small businesses the confidence to invest and create new jobs,” Minister for Jobs, Investment and Tourism Stuart Ayres said. “This shows how resilient the Regional NSW economy is even with the drought biting hard many parts of the state.”

Mr Ayres added that Regional NSW possessed the largest and most diverse regional economy in Australia, with almost 210,000 businesses.

Regional NSW has an economy larger than South Australia’s total economy, and accounts for one-third of the total NSW gross state product.

NSW has continued to lead the nation with the lowest unemployment rate of 4.5 per cent and the lowest regional jobless rate in April 2019, according to a recent report by CommSec.
