With one of the biggest infrastructure project, the M4 tunnels being completed last week, the NSW Government has expressed their interest on the next big thing: the Sydney Gateway airport project. 

The Sydney Gateway will provide a new alternative route to the domestic and international airport terminals from the Sydney motorway network at St Peters interchange. 

Motorists will save up to 40 minutes from Parramatta to the airport, 30 minutes from Haberfield, 22 minutes from Bankstown or Campbelltown, and 19 minutes from Rozelle. 

“The delivery of the toll-free Sydney Gateway will be a massive improvement to the way motorists travel to Sydney Airport, and take around 10,000 heavy vehicles off local streets in Mascot every day as they travel to Port Botany,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said. 

In addition to the 10,000 trucks, it will take 100,000 vehicles off local streets in Mascot every day, improving the traffic flow.

Further, it will ease congestion on major roads by removing heavy vehicles and cars in areas including Southern Cross Drive, King Georges Road and the M5 East tunnel. 

“Sydney Gateway will include a dedicated flyover to the front door of the domestic airport terminal and improve connections towards Port Botany,” Minister for Roads Andrew Constance said. 

“There will be further time savings from Parramatta, Dee Why, Moorebank and Campbelltown, and provide relief to Southern Cross Drive, King Georges Road and the M5 East tunnel,” Mr Constance added. 

However, the project is still very much in the beginning stage as the combined Environmental Impact Statement and Major Development Plan will be placed on public exhibition in late 2019. 

The project will also need approval from both the NSW and the Commonwealth government, as the road will pass through land in the Sydney Airport owned by the Commonwealth, and land under the NSW jurisdiction.
