Cycleway construction and deconstruction work conditions in Sydney CBD have been changed last week.

According to the NSW government, work hours on the cycleways of Castlereagh and Liverpool Streets in the CBD have been extended.

The construction work of the cycleways now starts at 8am each Saturday and concludes at 6pm instead of 1pm as it had previously.

The extension of working hours is expected to reduce the number of weeknight shifts required for the completion of the construction work.

Moreover, the preparation of the removal of College Street cycleway initiated last Sunday.

According to the change, College Street Cycleway will be closed from 8pm to 5am on weekends and while the work takes place.

The current cycleway works are part of an integrated Transport for NSW plan to ensure enhanced access for all users of the CBD, including users travelling by car, taxi, train, bus, bicycle, foot or any combination of those modes.

Also, the work will support the major construction of light rail along George Street and new underground Sydney Metro beneath Sydney Harbour and through the CBD.

CBD Transport Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said that College Street cycleway would remain open until an alternative cycleway was accessible along Castlereagh, Liverpool and Kent streets.

“When the new cycleways on Castlereagh and Liverpool streets are completed, it will be the first time cyclists have a fully connected route through the CBD. College Street cycleway will be removed once the new connected cycleway network, linking the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Central, is operational,” said Ms Prendergast.

“In readiness for the completion of Castlereagh and Liverpool streets, the College Street cycleway median will start being replaced this weekend with a temporary median that will maintain separation from the adjacent traffic lane,” Ms Prendergast added.
