President Park Guen-hye is suspended after the South Korean MP’s overwhelming decision in favour of her impeachment.

The final vote count of 234-56, out of the 300-member National Assembly were in favour of the impeachment bill following the political corruption scandal involving her confidante, Choi Soon-sil.

The impeachment bill suspends Ms Park’s powers and duties as she is to wait in the Blue House until the Constitutional Court’s nine judges reach a verdict. Her powers have been temporarily transferred to Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn.

Although she apologised for her “lack of virtue” and “carelessness”, she has resisted to step down.

“I solemnly accept the voice of the Parliament and the people and sincerely hope this confusion is sound resolved,” Ms Park said at her cabinet meeting.

Ms Park also showed intention of fighting her impeachment, telling the cabinet members she would only “calmly” prepare for the court’s deliberations.

Analysts believe this is because the presidents who leave office before their five-year term, open themselves up to criminal charges.

Her criminal charges may include embezzlement, extorting tens of millions of dollars, choosing top government officials and distorting policy.

If the nine judges support her impeachment, she will be removed from the office and a presidential election will be held in 60 days. If at least six judges oppose, she will regain her powers and end her term in February 2018.

However, six judges were appointed by Ms Park herself, or are close to her party.

Moreover, it may take up to six months for the judges to reach a verdict. While waiting for the deliberations, she can still use her official car and plane and receive her monthly salary averaging in $15,000.
