A new 50-metre bridge has opened to motorists travelling southbound on the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga.

This is one of the outcomes of the $3 billion NorthConnex project, aimed at improving travel times in Sydney.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said that from now, motorists approaching the M1 Pennant Hills Road intersection will instead be directed onto a new 400-metre lane.

“By relocating southbound traffic, the construction team are able to continue to excavate the new tunnel entry and exit points beneath the bridge without disruption to M1 motorists travelling above,” Mr Constance said.

“The bridge has quickly taken shape in the last weeks with asphalting, barrier installation and line marking, while work to build the new Northern Interchange is also progressing at pace,” he added.
The bridge will allow motorists to travel to their destination, without the disruption from the construction.

In addition, the M2 third westbound lane on the Hills M2 between Pennant Hills and Windsor roads has also opened, making the NorthConnex project three months ahead of schedule.

NorthConnex is a nine kilometre tunnel linking the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills.

The project aims to remove approximately 5000 trucks of the Pennant Hills Road.

Moreover, it will save motorists who use the tunnel up to 15 minutes travel time by bypassing up to 21 traffic lights along Pennant Hills Road.

Once complete, NorthConnex will be the longest road tunnel in Australia.
