Health and safety warnings for gas heaters have been issued as NSW Health and Fair Trading are raising awareness of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

This came to light after carbon monoxide poisoning related death of a Melbourne woman in her home. As a result, the Victorian Government is considering a ban on open-flue gas heaters.

Even though most heaters sold in New South Wales for workplaces and homes are space heaters rather than open-flue gas heaters, NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rose Webb said that NSW residents should be aware of its dangers.

“Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide can be released from open-flue heaters, outdoor heaters, burning charcoal or BBQ coal,” Ms Webb said.

According to the Senior Specialist in Toxicovigilance at the NSW Poisons Information Centre, Genevieve Adamo, carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in the bloodstream, depriving the heart, brain, and vital organs of oxygen.

Initial symptoms to the exposure of carbon monoxide could include headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

Moreover, prolonged exposure to the gas can lead to unconsciousness and even death.

NSW Health said that to prevent any exposure to harmful gasses, households and workplaces should ensure that the heater and gas supply are certified, properly installed, and regularly serviced.

Also, the heater should be situated in a well-ventilated area, and be turned off if not in use.

In addition, NSW Health emphasised the importance of supervising children around heaters.
