The Opal Park & Ride trial will be expanded to Kogarah train station, according to the NSW Government.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced that following the successful Opal Park & Ride trial at Ashfield, Kogarah train station will be included in the trial by September.

Opal Park & Ride provide customers with up to 18 hours free parking each day if they use public transport.

Customers who do not catch public transport within 18 hours from the time of entry are charged at a daily rate in line with the commercial rates for the local area.

“We know parking at train stations can be a real issue for customers, with spaces often used by those who aren’t catching public transport, but now we can use Opal technology to prioritise those catching a train, bus or ferry,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We want to make it easier for customers to access public transport and this trial aims to ensure that car parks provided for commuters are used by the people they are intended for – customers using public transport.,” she said.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said, “research shows up to 46 per cent of people who use commuter car parks do not catch public transport, which is why we have developed this system to give priority”.

“We have also seen great results at Ashfield with more than 6000 customers making use of the free parking in the first full month and we expect to see the same great results at Kogarah,” Mr Constance said.
