New lifts and escalators have been purchased for the Sydney Metro from Chatswood into the city, extending to the south-west.

Approximately 70 lifts and 130 escalators will be installed to accommodate people in wheelchairs, parents with prams, and those who are less able.

The six new metro railway stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street, and Waterloo will be installed with the new lifts and escalators.

In addition, lifts and escalators will be installed for the direct access to Central Walk from the underground Central Station metro platforms. New escalators will also allow access from the Central Walk concourse to platforms 12-23 at Central Station.

Further, the 11 stations between the Bankstown line to metro will be installed with lifts. The stations will include Punchbowl, Wiley Park, Canterbury, Hurlstone Park, and Dulwich Hill.

“We’re building this unprecedented project mostly deep underground, and we need this infrastructure to get customers to these fully-accessible stations,” Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said.

He added that there will be more choice for Sydney siders to get around Sydney once Sydney Metro is constructed.

Sydney Metro will be Australia’s first fully automated railway with platform screen doors. These doors will keep people away from the tracks and allow trains to get in and out of each station much faster.

They are due to open and operate in the city’s north-west from the early 2019.
