The Sydney Gateway project has been approved as it aims to ease Sydney Airport congestion.

The $2.6 billion project will run from the new St Peters interchange to both International and Domestic Terminals toll free.

The project will extend from Westconnex, and include the relocation of Airport Drive to Tempe, and upgrades to Qantas Drive and Joyce Drive.

The new Qantas Drive will bypass all traffic lights along the Sydney motorway networks to the Domestic Terminal.

“With Sydney Gateway completed, drivers will be able to travel between Penrith or Parramatta and the Domestic Airport terminal without stopping at a single traffic light,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

“This connection will also help fix notorious bottlenecks and congestion on roads around the Airport, which often create headaches for travellers,” she added.

The new motorway is also due to reduce travel times when used in conjunction with other Sydney motorway connections.

For example, it will save up to 40 minutes during morning peak times between Parramatta and the Domestic Airport, and 41 minutes between Dee Why and the Domestic Airport.

Further, it will save up to 22 minutes during morning peak times between Campbelltown and the Domestic Airport.

In addition, a three-kilometer section of the Port Botany freight rail line will increase capacity and improve service reliability.

The project is due to be completed in 2023, as drivers to the Sydney Airport will face a five-year disruption.
