Drivers who spend $15 or more a week or $780 per year on tolls will be eligible for half-priced vehicle registration from 1 July 2019.

The program will be available for all standard privately registered cars, utes, four-wheels and motorcycles.

This will be part of the toll roads program. Drivers who spend $25 or more a week, or a minimum of $1300 per year on tolls will continue to receive their free rego.

Currently, over 140,000 drivers are eligible for the free rego. However, this number is set to increase to more than 300,000 drivers as they will be eligible for either half-priced or free registration.

“We know meeting costs of living pressures are a big challenge for many households and we are committed to doing everything we can to ease those burdens,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

The eligibility will also change so that multiple tags on one account can count towards Toll Relief. This will allow families with more than one vehicle registered to an account combine their total spend to qualify for one half-price or free registration.

In addition, the program will be backdated so that eligible motorists can count their toll spend from 1 July 2018.

“This is about putting money back into the pockets of hardworking motorists,” Minister for Roads, Melinda Pavey said.

The program is expected to cost $100 million in the first year.
