Major construction work began this week for the biggest upgrade to the Central Station in a decade, including new Sydney Metro platforms deep underground and the landmark Central Walk.

The upgrade is part of the $955 million investment to the iconic station, and will improve the public transport services in Sydney.

“This work underway at Central Station will form a key part of Australia’s first turn-up-and-go metro network which will move an extra 100,000 customers an hour across the CBD,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

“Once complete in 2024 Metro trains will be pulling up at Central Station at least every four minutes in the peak. Ultimately the Metro will allow us to boost the number of rail services travelling through the CBD from 120 an hour to200,” she added.

In addition, the upgrades will fix the Bankstown Line bottleneck as well as add extra trains for the Illawarra Line and South Coast customers, Western Line customers, Airport and South Line customers, and Inner West and Leppington Line customers.

Commuters travelling to and from Central Station won’t be disrupted as a temporary platform has been built to make way for the construction of the 27-metre platform underground.

At the same time, train testing will continue on the Sydney Metro Northwest rail line from Rouse Hill to Chatswood, and will be opened in the coming months.

Further, the Metro rail services between Bankstown and Chatswood will open in 2024.
