The NSW Government has revealed plans to create 250,000 new jobs in the next four years, ahead of the state election next month.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the government, if re-elected, will reach this target by focusing on boosting employment opportunities in Western Sydney and regional NSW.

The plan includes establishing two new vocational high schools and expanding the Productivity Bootcamp program to two locations in Western Sydney and the South Coast.

“We are prioritising young people trying to get in to a trade with the bootcamp program and at the same time giving those whose ambition is to learn a trade the opportunity to do so through new vocational high schools,” Ms Berejiklian said.

The announcement comes after the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released jobs data showing NSW’s unemployment rate has fallen to a record low of 3.9 per cent.

Ms Berejiklian said these figures are the result of the government surpassing its previous four-year employment target of 150,000 by creating more than 420,000 new jobs.

However, youth unemployment rates remain significantly high in some areas of NSW, including 23.3 per cent in Grafton and Coffs Harbour.

Ms Berejiklian said the new vocational schools, one to be located in Western Sydney and the other on the North Coast, will train students in industry skills and enable them to study a trade in industries such as construction, hospitality and engineering while undertaking the HSC.

Meanwhile, the expanded Productivity Bootcamp program will provide students with skills training over eight weeks while they work on-site of a major NSW infrastructure project.

“The concept is truly exciting because it brings together the best of traditional learning associated with the HSC and the hands-on skills that will allow our tradies of tomorrow to kick-start their careers,” Deputy Premier John Barilaro said.
