The total number of jobs worked in Australia increased by 1.2 per cent in the December quarter of 2018, reaching one million in the number of secondary jobs, according to new insights released by the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This figure was more than double the quarterly average over the past five years and represented more than seven per cent of all jobs in the economy.

Job vacancies for secondary jobs also increased and accounted for approximately 1.7 per cent of all available jobs, which was the highest rate since the series began in 2010.

“More than a third of this increase in filled jobs was accounted for by secondary jobs, which shows that multiple job holders are accounting for a larger share of filled jobs in the labour market,” Chief Economist at the Australia Bureau of Statistics Bruce Hockman said.

Administrative and support service industry topped the list with the most secondary jobs at 23.2 per cent.

However, the education industry saw the largest increase in the number of secondary jobs, with a high growth figure of 8.2 per cent.

Overall in the September to December 2018 quarter, the number of filled jobs in Australia increased by 158,905 with main jobs increasing by 98.882 and secondary jobs increasing by 59,023.
